Ecclesiastes 6:9 and Mk 8:34 give us heaven's health and fitness plan. This guaranteed plan for spiritual health and fitness consists of three basic elements: a weight-loss plan, an exercise plan and a Trainer.
Spiritual health and fitness begins with losing weight through a "weight-loss plan". To be healthy we need to drop dead weight – unwanted pounds (Heb 12:1). The "weight loss plan" of heaven requires denial of self (Mk 8:34). So I must not let my "appetites" cause me to wander (vs. 9) leading me into a kind of spiritual ill health and weakness. Let us be spiritually fit and healthy receiving from the Lord the good things that make us strong.
Similar to Ecclesiastes 6:9, Mk 8:34 shows us the "exercise of heaven" and the "Trainer" from heaven. The "exercise of heaven" is taking up our cross and following Jesus. The Trainer from heaven is Jesus himself who calls us to follow him by keeping in step with the Holy Spirit and run the race laid out for us .
